Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has urged Kenyans to register as voters and participate in the March 4, 2013 polls, which he described as a landmark election for it will be the first under the new constitution.

Dr. Mutunga made these remarks when he registered to vote in Korogocho, in Nairobi’s Ruaraka Constituency. He said an all-inclusive electoral process will boost the credibility of the polls and strengthen democracy in Kenya.

IEBC Chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan lauded the Chief Justice for registering in an informal settlement, terming it an act of humility. Dr. Mutunga said the area has been his constituency for over 20 years.

The Chief Justice is the latest in the list of high profile personalities to be registered at a public function by the electoral commission. Others have been President Mwai Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and retired President Daniel arap Moi.

Mr. Hassan also announced of plans to register the Speaker of the National Assembly on Saturday at Emuhaya Constituency and the Vice President at Tseikuru in Mwingi North Constituency on Monday next week.

IEBC is increasingly using innovative ways to boost public confidence in the newly-introduced Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) system and achieve its target of registering 18 million voters by December 18, 2012.

At the same time, IEBC Vice-Chairperson Lillian Mahiri-Zaja has warned political party agents against setting up membership registration desks at voter registration centres. She also encouraged those with old-generation ID cards to come out and register since the documents are still recognized as a valid form of identification.

The process is going on and the LGBTI communities in Kenya must not be left out. Lets make sure we are part of the decision making processes in our country.
