Speech by GALCK’s General Manager, MaqC Eric Gitau, At the Celebrations of IDAHO, At the Go-Down Arts Centre, May 17th 2012

I am most pleased to join members of the LGBTI community in Kenya and the rest of the world as we celebrate the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. This day is marked since 2004 to create awareness on Homophobia and Transphobia, which in turn provides an opportunity to take action and engage in dialogue with the media, policymakers, public opinion, other civil societies, or religious groups around sexual and gender diversity.

International Day against Homophobia, May 17th 2012.

Good evening, and let me express my deep honour and pleasure at being here. I want to thank the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya for the invitation to be your keynote speaker. I want to commend Monica and MaqC for their inspiring words.

On December 10th, 1948, the UN General Assembly passed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It proclaims a simple, powerful idea: All human are born free and equal in dignity and rights. And with the declaration, it was made clear that rights are not conferred by Governments; they are birth right of all people. Press Release by GALCK and KHRC on the KNCHR Report

We recall that all human rights are universal and inalienable and, in encouraging the realization of these rights in Kenya, GALCK and KHRC endorse the recommendations set out in the KNCHR report and further urge the Government of Kenya and non-state actors:

For most of that time - whenever you think it started - lesbians and gay men with children had them in heterosexual marriages and came out later. Out lesbian and gay parents were sometimes rearing children as singles or in couples, although heterosexist legal decisions mean they often were not able to parent their kids. In any event, issues concerning lesbian and gay parenting were inextricably bound up with issues of divorce, and often of remarriage and step-parenting as well.

The president was speaking to European Union ambassadors accredited to Uganda

Local media reported that Museveni told the Head of the European Union delegation to Uganda, Dr Roberto Ridolfi at State House in Entebbe that “many years ago there were four prominent homosexuals, three of them chiefs and one who did great work for the country.”

It is not clear if he was referring to the historical Buganda King (Kabaka) Daniel Mwanga (1884 -1897) who is widely believed in most historical circles as having been a gay man. Mwanga is the grandfather of the current Kabaka of Buganda, one of the most influential regions in Uganda, both political and economically.
